What Constitutes a Dental Emergency?
Not every dental concern requires immediate attention, but some dental emergencies require urgent care to protect your health and preserve your smile. Ask yourself the following questions to determine whether you should seek emergency dental care:
- Do you have tooth pain? Severe, persistent pain resulting from trauma, tooth damage, or infection is a dental emergency requiring prompt care.
- Do you have a knocked-out tooth? A knocked-out tooth requires immediate care to ensure the best chances of replanting it, so it's important to contact us right away.
- Do you have one or more loose teeth? Loose teeth are always a sign of an emergency, requiring immediate care, even if there is no pain.
- Are there signs of infection? If you experience signs of infection, such as facial swelling or a pimple-like bump on the gums, it is important to seek immediate care.
- Do you have a chipped, cracked, or broken tooth? Seek prompt care if you have a chipped or damaged tooth, especially if it is painful or its inner layers are exposed.
- Have you lost a filling or crown? A lost or damaged restoration can provide an entryway for harmful bacteria, leading to further decay or damage, so it's important to have it repaired as soon as possible.
If you experience a dental emergency, please call us immediately at 407-608-5997. We are happy to provide same-day emergency appointments to provide you with prompt relief. If, however, the emergency occurs outside our office hours, please call our office line for guidance.
If you or a loved one experiences a severe injury or a life-threatening emergency, don't wait. Please dial 911 for immediate care.
What Are Care Tips for Common Dental Emergencies?
While professional care is essential, there are a few things you can do at home before you are seen by Dr. Wirth and his team:
- Knocked-Out Tooth: If you knock out a tooth, pick it up gently by its crown, rinse it to remove any debris, and place it back in its socket or carry it in a container of milk. Seek immediate care.
- Loose or Dislodged Tooth: Bite down gently on a clean cloth or piece of gauze to keep the affected tooth in place. We will recommend the most conservative solutions to stabilize your tooth and restore its health and function.
- Tooth Pain: If you have a toothache, floss to remove any debris that may be trapped between teeth, which may be causing your pain. If the pain persists, rinse with warm salt water, apply cold compresses, and take an over-the-counter pain reliever to ease your discomfort.
- Chipped or Broken Tooth: Pick up any pieces of the tooth and place them in a small container of milk. Apply cold compresses to ease any swelling, and take over-the-counter pain relief medication, if needed, to address any discomfort.
- Lost Crown or Filling: Use dental cement or sugar-free gum to keep your restoration in place. Never use super glue, which can cause serious damage to your teeth and gums.
- Soft Tissue Bleeding: If you have bleeding from the lips, cheeks, gums, or tongue, apply gentle pressure to help slow it down. If the bleeding is heavy and uncontrollable, head to your nearest ER for immediate care.
