How Often Do You Need Dental Exams and Cleanings?

The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends scheduling regular dental visits at intervals determined by your dentist. Most patients in good oral health typically require preventive exams and cleanings twice a year to maintain healthy smiles. However, patients with periodontal disease or those with risk factors for dental health problems may require more frequent dental visits.

What Can You Expect During Your Comprehensive Dental Exam?

We will start your comprehensive dental exam by asking you about any changes in your health history and if you have any new oral health concerns. We will also capture digital dental X-rays to uncover any underlying oral health concerns.

Dr. Wirth will perform a thorough evaluation of your teeth and gums to rule out early decay, gum inflammation, damaged restorations, or other oral health concerns, and will also check the alignment of your teeth and bite. Your exam will include a quick and pain-free oral cancer screening to check for abnormalities. Early detection of oral cancer can be life-saving, offering the best chances for a positive outcome.

What Happens During Your Professional Dental Cleaning?

Even with the best brushing and flossing practices, plaque and tartar can gradually accumulate on your teeth and your gum line. Our dental hygienist will use special dental tools, including an ultrasonic scaler, to gently remove plaque, tartar, and surface tooth stains. They will also polish and floss your teeth, leaving them clean and bright. Regular dental cleanings have been shown to lower the risk of cavities, gum inflammation, and bad breath.

After your teeth cleaning, we may apply fluoride to your tooth surfaces to lower the risk of cavities. We are also happy to offer hydroxyapatite treatments for those who prefer an alternative to fluoride that helps remineralize the teeth and prevent tooth decay.

Additional Preventive Measures

The following are oral appliances we offer to safeguard your smile:

  • Night Guards: If you grind or clench your teeth in your sleep, a condition known as bruxism, we may recommend wearing a custom night guard. This helps prevent the forces of grinding and clenching from leading to uneven tooth wear, tooth fracture, jaw tension, morning headaches, and a host of oral and overall health complications.
  • Deprogrammer Oral Appliances:If you have jaw discomfort associated with teeth grinding and clenching, we may recommend a Deprogrammer Oral Appliance. The removable, mouthguard-like device can help your jaw muscles relax, relieving muscle tightness and TMJ discomfort.

Why Would You Need a Deep Dental Cleaning?

If your exam reveals signs of gum disease, Dr. Wirth may recommend a deep dental cleaning known as scaling and root planing. This involves removing plaque and tartar buildup from your teeth and gum line, and gently cleaning and smoothing your tooth root surfaces. This non-surgical treatment helps promote healing and maintain your gum health.

Our Philosophy of Patient Care

When it comes to your care, our philosophy is simple: to provide you with care guided by your needs, not dictated by insurance limitations. We never minimize or ignore the early signs of dental disease because of insurance restrictions. Instead, we provide thoughtful education and counseling, and we recommend the most conservative, evidence-based solutions to protect your smile.

Every treatment plan is deliberate, transparent, and centered on helping you achieve lasting oral health. Our practice is founded on honesty, integrity, respect, and a commitment to treating our valued patients the same way we would our own families.
